Patchwork and quilting Patchwork is not a special feature of any single region; it appeared everywhere, in particular in the places of developed manufacturing. The most favorable conditions for it were in Russia and the USA of the XVIII century, where it appeared at the same time. «Loskutnoye shytyo» (Russian for «patchwork») soon became very popular among the common people and aristocracy. In some towns it was preserved in traditional female costumes, like it was in Ivanovo. It also developed very quickly in the areas of American emigrants, so patchwork was claimed to be a national type of art there. Here in Ukraine, there also exists a kind of patchwork; it’s knitting of narrow fabric stripes by a crochet. For example, in Chernigiv region they make stripe carpets for the floor using this kind of technique.
